Credit cards has now become almost a mainstay of any household. While the credit card provides many useful conveniences such as online shopping it has also contributed to a massive blowout in household debt.
Households have taken of great economic conditions over the past decade and ease in which credit is made available. While the economic situations have changed people have still yet to adjust their spending habits. If you debt is starting to get out of control and you are struggling to keep up here are some tips to get you out of your credit card debt. 1. Don’t pay the minimum balance. Banks love it when you pay only the minimum balance. It means that they can keep you trapped with your credit card burden for years if not decades. Just think about it. If you are only paying the minimum balance you are barely paying off the interest component let alone the principle so how are you ever going to pay off your debt, in the meantime when the next months credit card bill comes in you again are paying off the interest. The only person winning here is really the bank who continues to receive their interest, in the meantime your little purchase whether it was a new pair of shoes, a jacket or whatever is starting to get really expensive. 2. Stop digging a bigger whole for yourself. If you are currently in a credit card crunch, the last thing to do is make your situation any worse. What many people do instead is that they continue spending on their credit card. When they start to see the balance starting to shrink they lose their self control again and start spending as though their credit card debt situation is under control. Wrong. The reality is you got into this mess because of your spending, and the first step is to completely pay of all your credit card debts. The best thing to do is either cut up your credit cards so you won’t be tempted or lock them away where you can’t get access to them unless its an emergency, a real emergency. 3. Move your credit card balances into the one card. If possible cut your credit card balances to the one card. You might be able to take advantage of interest free introductory offers available where you can then transfer all your balances across. The idea is to have the one minimum payment you need to make each month and therefore get rid of all your other credit cards. 4. Ask your bank for help. Most banks you have your credit card balances with are willing to help if you are willing to ask. Ask them for a reduction in your interest rate or a fee discount. By telling them you have other credit card offers many banks will be willing to keep your business. The best way to stop you from getting into this situation is to have a plan on how you spend your money. Know what your expenses are each month and spend within your means. Being in debt is never a pleasant experience and the more you do to avoid it the better your life is going to be. |
