Do you sometimes feel as if you are losing your sanity and are on the verge of burnout? We can all feel overwhelmed with the busyness of our lives, we have created a culture where it now almost expects you to jam pack as much in your life as possible otherwise you must not be succeeding.
In reality by jamming your life full, how can you possibly make room for the better opportunities that present themselves in your life. If both your hands are full with logs for instance, how then can you lend a hand to someone in need without letting go off what it is that you have in your hands. A great management tool that is utilized in many successful organizations is the art of delegation. After all if the managers were overwhelmed with the day to day processes of running the business how could they then focus on the bigger picture of the organization and steering it to greater success. We can definitely learn a thing or two from how successful organizations utilize delegation in their business. Think of your life like a business and how you too can learn to delegate tasks throughout your life so that it can free yourself up to enjoy the things that matter to you. A simple step is decide what matters most in your life, is it your family, your partner, your career or friends. Whatever it is write it down on a sheet of paper and rank them in order of importance. Now roughly put either a percentage or an approximate number of quality hours you are spending with each of those mentioned on your paper. For instance you might have written that your family is most important, yet you put down that you only spend 1 or 2 hours of quality time with them each week yet work was at the bottom of the list and you were spending an average of 2 extra hours each week at the office finishing off extra tasks. Once you have completed the above exercise you want to now write down all the things that take up your life that you don't find any enjoyment or you would rather not have to do in your life. Maybe it's mowing the lawn, cleaning the house or doing the laundry. Whatever it might be that is occupying your time now that you would in an ideal situation rather not do. The next step is now decide how important are the things that are most important to you and whether or not you can increase the quality time spent doing the things that matter to you and reducing the things that don't. This is where you can start deciding on which areas you might be able to delegate to someone else and therefore freeing up your time. It might be you may decide to hire a mowing service so that you have an extra few hours every fortnight on the weekends to enjoy with your kids. It might be that you order your groceries online and have them delivered so you have an extra night out with your partner. You get the idea. The idea of delegation in your life is deciding what is most important and therefore what your time is worth in order to enjoy more of it. For instance if you are earning $30 per hour at work and you work out that the mowing service costs $20 per fortnight then it would be silly for you to spend 2 hours worth $60 of your time mowing the lawn when you could be doing something more productive. Delegation really just enables you to focus your life on what matters most in your life. |
