Do you have a special dream? Perhaps something you wanted to do with your life while you were still a child? Today is the day to start to follow that dream. If you let it just sit, it has no chance of ever coming true. If you act on it, and begin to pursue it, there is the possibility that it just might materialize. However, it probably isn't a good idea to just chuck everything in your life right now and take off on that quest! Proceed one step at a time.
First, take some time to flesh out the details of your dream. Journaling is a great way to do this, but just daydreaming can work, too. Try to determine if the dream is about an income level and lifestyle, or if it is more about a certain line of work or accomplishment. Is it about what you do or about what you'd like to be? Probably, it's a little bit of both. Spend some time getting a visual picture of your dream. Step two is to believe in yourself. It's all too common for us human creatures to look at a much desired goal and talk ourselves out of it because we think we aren't good enough to reach it. Or perhaps we think we can't do it. Either of these mindsets is a dead end way to think. Why would one person be "good enough" to live a certain way while another isn't? And if your trouble is one of doubting your abilities, remember that all accomplishments and fulfilled dreams have to start with faith. Third, look at your dream with a dose of realism thrown in. There are many dreams that never materialize for the dreamer. Especially if you long to be a successful artist or entertainer, remember that there are many other talented people competing for that piece of the pie. Is there enough pie to go around? Can you out-dream or out-believe all of the competition? Maybe not. If you really thrive on creating art or being on stage, perhaps you should tone your dreams down to a local level. Paint murals on the walls of the small town where you live, or perform in the local Little Theater. You can still be fulfilled in your craft and be pursuing your dream. Just do it part time while you hold down a real job that provides a livable income. If nothing but Broadway will do, however, here's an idea. Give your dream a target date, such as a year from now. Do all you can to pursue that dream role, but be willing to tone it down if it doesn't pan out by the deadline. The point is not to discourage you, but to help you avoid being an unhappy, frustrated, starving artist! If your dream is about a service or business you want to provide to others, begin now to learn what you need to know for success. Some business success is based on right thinking, but the product or service has to be exemplary or you won't make it. If it's a worthwhile dream and really your own personal calling, chances are you will enjoy the journey and the education. |
