Why Lack of Sleep is Affecting Your Success PDF Print E-mail

It might seem like a successful business person would regularly miss sleep to get more work done. The typical "work-aholic" personality is one that is burning the candle at both ends to make a buck. The raw truth is that this kind of behavior is self-defeating. The human body needs sleep to operate at its peak efficiency. For most people, eight hours a night is required to thrive.

Without adequate sleep, things happen that will ultimately affect your level of success. One of the most notable effects of sleep deprivation is that a person will not be able to think as clearly or logically. Of course, this will affect all of the business decisions that must be made every day. In addition to less logical thinking, it is even likely that your vocabulary will suffer from sleeplessness. In other words, just when you need to sound intelligent and persuasive you won't be able to come up with the words.

Sleep is as essential to health as exercise. Many people are beginning to carve out time in their busy schedules for exercise, but they still let themselves be cut short on sleep. Working mothers particularly are likely to have so much to do that the hours for sleep are shortened. But what can a person do to remedy the situation?

First, time for sleeping must become a priority. Set a bedtime and stick with it. Don't let yourself slip into unwinding in front of the television for several hours in the late evening. Similarly, don't let yourself take your work to bed with you. An occasional all-nighter, like the occasional hot fudge sundae, is not going to ruin your health, but the trick is to keep the occasions to a bare minimum.

If you have trouble sleeping, try some quiet music and a cup or two of herbal tea in the evening. Take a warm bath and spend your time defusing a little earlier in the evening, like from 8 to 10, instead of from 10 to 12. Yes, you'll have to give up something you are used to doing. Perhaps you'll only have to give up a mindless television show or two. Believe me, you'll be better off!

Exercise is essential to health, and done properly it can help you get a more restful night of sleep. Most sleep experts recommend that you get thirty minutes to an hour of aerobic exercise in the late afternoon to help you get to sleep. Exercise can be stimulating, so you really should not do it just before going to bed. Early morning is a good time, but if you can do it in the late afternoon, it will help you to be tired enough to sleep.

It may sound counterintuitive, but sleep will help you be successful and reach your dreams. You will be a more pleasant person with a happier disposition. Your mind will be more efficient and you'll be able to fight off illness better. Don't let lack of sleep rob you of success.
